Tutors are uniquely critical to the success of our Haitian students.
The Haitian educational system is based on rote learning, which relies on repeating information until it's fixed in memory, often through drills.
Children are also placed in a grade based on their age. Therefore, if a child is eight years old, he must be ready for third grade. And if a child has no one to practice the memorization drills, he will not succeed in school. Haiti education requires either a literate guardian/parent or a tutor to pass a grade. Additionally, children learn and speak Creole at home, and when they are in school, everything is in French, which is a language their parents do not speak.
The tutors are essential to the success of these children.
